The supreme female divinity of the Phoenician nations, the goddess of love and fruitfulness. She symbolized the female principle. The Babylonian and Assyrian counterpart of Ashtoreth was Ishtar. Ashtoreth is referred to in the Bible at 1 Samuel 21:10, 1 Kings 11:5, and 2 Kings 23:13. She also may be the "Queen of Heaven" in Jeremiah 7:18 and 44:17, 25. Milton also referenced her in 'The Hymn' from his 'On the Morning of Christs Nativity', written in 1645.
